Speaking in the L2

Just wanted to share a couple videos from one of my favorite language learning bloggers, Benny the Irish Polyglot.

This first one is a TEDx Talk he gave a couple years ago. (He's also got a new TEDTalk coming out soon, so keep your eyes peeled to the TED website for that one!) I really particularly connected with the last bit starting at about minute 15, but really the last several minutes... from 11:57 really, is fabulous. So, if you don't have 18 minutes to spare, head to 11:57.

Then here's another video that's more cute than anything, but also inspiring.

Both those have to do with talking a lot in your L2. I've been actively trying to talk more in the daily grind at work. However, I'm starting to think finding a language helper might be good for me. When it comes down to it, my job revolves around the patient, not around them helping me improve my Spanish. So I think if I'm going to improve in greater leaps and bounds, this might be the way to go. Anyway, I'm just starting to delve into this, if you're thinking along the same lines-- that having a native speaker to practice talking would be a good idea for you-- here's a blog post from Aaron over at Everyday Language Learner that seems to link to just about all the info under the sun on the topic.

  1. I think it's great that you're taking learning Spanish so seriously. I keep saying I'm going to learn another language. I studied French in high school. But, really never learned to speak it.

    1. It's never too late give it go! That belief that babies learn languages best is silly.
