Daily Challenge 3/13/11

Spend some time without shoes and socks today.

How to Do It
Slip off your shoes and socks while you're at home today, and walk barefoot on your rugs, carpet or finished wood floors. If you have diabetes or circulation problems do not go barefoot; instead, take a 20-minute walk with your shoes on.

Why It Matters
Shoes and supportive inserts do much of the work our feet would do if they weren't trapped inside shoes, even athletic footwear. Barefoot walking helps exercise and strengthen the many muscles in your feet. Build barefoot time gradually to make your arches and feet stronger.

Fun Fact
Abebe Bikila, of Ethiopia, ran the 1960 Rome Olympics marathon in bare feet and won in a record setting 2:15:16.2, making him the first black African to win Olympic gold.

I hate socks and shoes, so I go barefoot all the time. I sometimes will take short ventures outside barefoot too. I've dabbled in barefoot running as well. Never made it to full out running on barefeet though. If you're wanting to increase your barefoot time, do it slowly. As in maybe add 5 minutes a day for a 3-4 days in a row, then plateau for 3-4, then increase again. Those little muscles in your feet (and do I mean LITTLE!!!) can make a big stink if they're called upon to work more than they're used to too fast. I really don't want to see anyone that might be reading this on a professional basis, so take it slow!
